What does PSHE look like at St. Andrew's?

Curriculum Intent

Our well-planned and carefully taught RHSE & PSHE curriculum supports pupils’ wellbeing in the following areas:

  1. Confidence – helping pupils understand emotions, recognise strengths and express themselves, benefiting them in school and daily life.
  2. Self-regulation – developing strategies to manage behaviour and respond to challenges by learning about emotions, choices and consequences.
  3. Relationships – teaching about friendships, communication and conflict resolution to build stronger, more respectful relationships.
  4. Empathy – encouraging understanding of different perspectives and experiences.
  5. Respect – contributing to a positive, respectful environment and helping pupils recognise the impact of their words and actions.

RHSE & PSHE learning links closely to everyday situations at home and school.

For example:

  • Food and health – conversations at mealtimes can help children understand how different foods support their bodies.
  • Resilience – adults can encourage children to keep going when something feels difficult and reflect together on how challenges are managed.
  • Friendships and relationships – everyday situations can provide opportunities to talk about kindness, fairness and resolving disagreements.
  • Feelings and emotions – adults can support children to name and talk about how they feel in different situations.
  • Keeping safe, including online – real-life examples can be used to discuss choices, boundaries and where to seek help.
  • In the context of our core Christian values of respect, friendship and perseverance.  As a Church of England school, we will ensure that our curriculum protects, informs and nurtures all pupils.  We follow quality assured planning from Kapow. We also include helping pupils understand the role of money and finances in the wider world.

Curriculum Drivers

Relationships, Health and Sex Education

At St Andrew’s, we are committed to working closely with parents to ensure that we create the best possible Relationships Education/Relationships & Sex Education (RHSE) curriculum for our pupils, while also supporting parents in the conversations they may have with their children around these topics. We aim to build a partnership approach with parents towards Relationships Education/RHSE provision, where transparency and respectful understanding are the basis for all discussions. Parents are always welcome to contact the school to view resources and discuss any questions or concerns with the headteacher or subject lead - Mrs J Thompson.

From September 2026 we are moving to Kapow Primary for our PSHE and RHSE Scheme. the long term plan is in our policy (below,)  samples of the Knowledge Organisers which give an overview of the lessons will be here shortly.

We are currently consulting on our updated policy, which can be viewed here in draft:
